Munsell To Rgb Color Conversion
- To convert from sRGB to Munsell, rst use the sRGB standard to nd the CIE coordinates of the coloured light produced by a certain sRGB triple. Then invert the Munsell renotation to nd the Munsell colour that corresponds to those CIE coordinates. Tables 42 through 73 show the results. Possibly the CIE coordinates are beyond the MacAdam limits.
- The Virtual Munsell Color Wheel is a simple online tool that lets you browse the Munsell color notation in your web browser. Detailed information about Munsell as a color space can be found elsewhere on the web (I recommend The Dimensions of Color, Handprint, and Munsell). At the bottom of this tool you will see a circle of hue squares.
- You can't use RGB to Munsell values unless you know the validity of the source of your RGB. Remember its a conversion from some sort of scan or Photoshop color palette to a video screen color. Lots of room for math errors and miscalibration issues. No simple answers. You really need to get to see the Munsell Book of Color.
All I can find is 'Munsell Conversion - Version 6.22'. I've known this utility for quite a while now. But I did not think it would do the trick. Because, all along, I was under the impression that it could only convert FROM a Munsell notation TO Lab, XYZ, RGB, CMYK or xy. But now, thank's to you and my insistance, I've discovered that it can.
We created the Munsell Calculator for those of you that record only the Munsell color notation (code) in the field when describing soil color, but that require the soil color name in the soil description when preparing boring and test pit logs.
To use the Munsell Calculator, go to Hue 1 - select the appropriate button. Then enter the Hue 2, Value, and Chroma values. The Munsell code will appear in the Code/Color row, along with the soil color name and a color strip. To use a second color to describe the soil color, press the '+' button after entering the code for the first color, and then enter the code for the second color. The calculated soil color(s) name(s) can be copied in two formats – soil color name (code) or soil color name – for further pasting into your logs (desktop users only). If copying two soil colors, they will be separated by the word 'to.'

Arguments
the_hue | a vector of one or more more hues, upper-case |
---|---|
the_value | a vector of one or more values Geometer%27s sketchpad mac. |
the_chroma | a vector of one or more chromas, may be NA for neutral hues |
alpha | alpha channel value (for transparency effects) |
maxColorValue | maximum sRGB color value (see |
return_triplets | should the function return sRGB triplets instead of an R color |
returnLAB | should the function return CIE LAB (D65) coordinates |
color | a |
colorSpace | the distance metric (colorspace) to use for finding the closest chip: CIE2000 is the most accurate but requires farver >= 2.0.3, Euclidean distance in (CIE)LAB is a close second, while Euclidean distance in sRGB is not at all accurate and should only be used for demonstration |
nClosest | number of closest Munsell colors to return |
munsellColor | character vector of strings containing Musell colors, e.g. '10YR 4/3' |
convertColors | logical, should parsed Munsell colors be converted into sRGB values |

Details
These functions generalize to vectorized usage, as long as the length of each argument is the same. Both functions will pad output with NA if there are any NA present in the inputs.
Neutral hues are approximated by greyscale shades ranging from 20% (darker) to 80% (lighter). No chroma is required for neutral hues.
Gley soil colors that are missing a chroma will not be correctly interpreted. Consider using a chroma of 1. https://wnluxa.over-blog.com/2021/01/betterzip-4-0-2-archiving-tool.html.
Values of '2.5' (common in soil color descriptions) are silently truncated to '2'.
Rgb To Munsell Converter
Non-standard Munsell colors (e.g. '7.9YR 2.7/2.0') can be matched (nearest-neighbor, no interpolation) to the closest color within the `munsell` sRGB look-up table via getClosestMunsellChip()
. See examples below.
Note
Care should be taken when using the resulting sRGB values; they are close to their Munsell counterparts, but will vary based on your monitor and ambient lighting conditions. Also, the value used for maxColorValue
will affect the brightness of the colors. Th default value (1) will usually give acceptable results, but can be adjusted to force the colors closer to what the user thinks they should look like.
Value
For Munsell to sRGB conversion, a vector of R colors is returned that is the same length as the input data. If return_triplets
is TRUE
, then a dataframe (of sample length as input) of r,g,b values is returned.
